The Tailored Scentwork Series
Move Beyond Generic Scentwork
Learn how to move beyond generic scentwork sessions to create tailored training that builds trust, strengthens client confidence and delivers clearer, more consistent results.
You already know scentwork can be powerful. But knowing what to teach is not always the same as knowing how to shape, adjust and tailor training to the specific dog and handler in front of you.
Many trainers are taught exercises, formats or class plans. Far fewer are taught how to:
- adjust searches for different dogs, handlers and skill levels
- recognise when a plan needs adapting
- create challenge without unnecessary frustration
- build trust by guiding clients beyond what they thought was possible
- turn scentwork from a generic activity into purposeful, tailored development
When scentwork stays generic, progress can become inconsistent. Dogs may struggle unnecessarily. Handlers may lose confidence. Clients may question their own ability, or yours.
But when training is tailored well:
- clients trust your judgement more deeply
- handlers gain confidence faster
- dogs progress more clearly
- sessions feel more productive
- clients are more likely to stay, return and keep progressing
This series is designed to help you build the skills that make that possible.
Why I Created This
Over many years of teaching scentwork, I’ve seen how often trainers are given exercises, lesson plans and training systems without being taught how to adapt them to the specific dog and handler in front of them. Yet that ability to assess, adapt and make thoughtful training decisions is often what separates competent trainers from truly effective ones.
The Tailored Scentwork Series was created to help trainers develop those skills. Rather than focusing solely on what to teach, this series focuses on how to think, adapt and coach more purposefully so training becomes a better fit for the team in front of you. This is not about teaching every dog or handler the same way. It’s about developing the judgement and flexibility needed to create training that fits.
How it works
The Tailored Scentwork Series is a collection of standalone trainer development blocks designed to help you move beyond generic scentwork teaching to create training that better fits the dog, handler and challenge in front of you.
Each block focuses on a specific area of trainer development and can be completed independently, allowing you to start with the area most relevant to your own teaching.
The Blocks
- Foundations of Tailored Scentwork (available now)
- Building Tailored Progression (coming soon)
- Search Design and Behavioural Insight (coming soon)
- Strategic Scentwork Decision Making (coming soon)
What You’ll Gain
Across the series, you’ll strengthen your ability to:
- assess dogs and handlers more thoughtfully
- adapt training with greater purpose
- coach more clearly and effectively
- build progression that fits the individual team
- design more effective searches
- solve problems more strategically
- make better training decisions
What’s Included
Each block includes:
- focused trainer development content
- carefully selected video examples and demonstrations
- structured reflection and application
- practical exercises and real world scenarios
- opportunities to develop observation, assessment and trainer judgement
- resources designed to support immediate application
This is not about collecting more exercises, lesson plans or information. It is about developing the judgement, adaptability and confidence to create training that genuinely fits the team you are working with. The most effective trainers are not those with the biggest toolbox. They are the ones who know how to adapt what they know to best serve the dog and handler standing in front of them.

FAQs
Q. Do I need to be an experienced scentwork trainer?
A. This series is designed for trainers who already have some scentwork experience and want to strengthen how they assess, design, adapt and tailor their training more effectively.
Q. Is this suitable if I teach differently from you?
A. Yes. This is not about copying a rigid system or teaching style. The focus is on strengthening your ability to make clearer, more thoughtful and more purposeful training decisions, whatever your existing approach.
Q. What if I’m not sure whether I’m ready?
A. Take a look at the self assessment section on this page. It is designed to help you decide whether this block is the right fit for your current stage of development. If you’re already teaching scentwork and want to strengthen how you assess, adapt and make coaching decisions, you’re likely to find this block valuable.
Q. Do I need to commit to everything at once?
A. No. Each development block is designed to work as a standalone experience, so you can choose the area most relevant to your current needs. If you would like broader development, you can also complete multiple blocks or the full series over time.
Q. Do I have to complete the blocks in a specific order?
A. No. While the blocks complement one another, each one focuses on a distinct area of trainer development and can be taken independently based on where you currently feel least clear, least confident or most ready to strengthen.
Q. Do I need to complete the full series to benefit?
A. No. Each block is designed to provide meaningful standalone development in a specific area of trainer growth. However, trainers who complete multiple blocks or the full series are likely to gain broader, more integrated development across the wider skill set involved in tailored scentwork training.
Q. How many CPD hours does this block represent?
A. Foundations of Tailored Scentwork represents approximately 12 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), including video content, reflection, practical exercises, trainer analysis tasks and application activities. As with all professional development, the exact time may vary depending on how deeply you engage with the reflection exercises, video analysis and practical tasks throughout the block.
Q. Can I pay in instalments?
A. Yes. Instalment options are available at checkout if you would prefer to spread the cost over time.
Q. Will I receive a certificate?
A. Yes. Each completed development block includes a certificate of completion recognising your commitment to strengthening that area of tailored scentwork training. Trainers completing the full Tailored Scentwork Series will also receive a full series completion certificate.
A Quick Self Assessment
Before enrolling, take a moment to consider whether this block is the right fit for where you are in your development right now.
This block is unlikely to be the right fit if:
- You are completely new to scentwork training
- You are mainly looking for games, activities or ready made lesson plans
- You want a step-by-step system to follow rather than guidance on adapting your training
- You are looking for quick fixes rather than thoughtful professional development
- You are not currently interested in exploring the thinking behind your coaching decisions
This block is likely to be a good fit for you if:
- You already teach scentwork and find yourself wanting to move beyond standard lesson plans and generic progression
- You sometimes look at a search and wonder whether there might be a more effective way to support that particular dog and handler
- You want to become more confident in adapting your coaching, rather than relying on the same solutions for every team
- You are interested in strengthening the thinking behind your decisions, not just learning more exercises
- You want to develop your handling, search design and coaching judgement in a practical way
- You recognise that good training isn’t just about what we teach, but when and why we teach it
